Antartica, a continent for Science
30th anniversary of the Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty on Environmental Protection
October 4 marked the 30th anniversary of the Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty on Environmental Protection, which declared the protection of the ecosystem and environment of Antarctica, being since then a 'natural reserve for peace and science'.
In the documentary "Antártida un continente para la ciencia" we went to record at the Juan Carlos I Spanish Antarctic Base, where glaciology, lichen physiology, permafrost, geomagnetism, ionosphere and meteorology database are investigated. Since 1988, open during the austral summer, which runs from November to March, this base has been the center for Spanish activities in Antarctica, especially for scientific research projects, respecting the ecosystem and fauna that surrounds it.
