BioImaC updates facilities and equipment to stay at the cutting edge of science

Facility renovation

In 2025, BioImaC completed a thorough renovation of its facilities and incorporated new, unique equipment, ensuring its continued position as a leading infrastructure in preclinical biomedical imaging.

In recent years, it has been able to access funding programs for the acquisition of new scientific infrastructure and the renovation of existing equipment through the UE's “NextGeneration” funds, funds from the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, and funds from the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation, with co-financing from the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund.

The old 4.7 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging equipment, which was the first preclinical imaging equipment installed in Spain and had been in service for thirty-one years, has been replaced. It has been replaced by 9.4 Tesla equipment with a 30 cm bore, making it unique in Spain at present.
A PET insert has been purchased for the 9.4T MRI machine, allowing for hybrid imaging, with high-resolution, high-contrast morphological images of soft tissue (MRI) and highly sensitive functional images (PET), which is also unique in the country.
Funding has also been obtained to replace the current PET-CT equipment, which has been in service for more than twelve years, with a state-of-the-art hybrid PET/CT scanner, which is currently in the bidding phase for its upcoming acquisition by BioImaC.
Finally, an IVIS Spectrum Optical Imaging system has been added to BioImaC's infrastructure, allowing non-invasive visualization and monitoring of biological processes in live animals, using both bioluminescence and fluorescence.
In many cases, this infrastructure renewal has required co-financing from the Complutense University of Madrid, which is thus contributing to the investment needed to expand and improve BioImaC's portfolio of services.
