New x ray powder diffractometer Malvern Panalytical Empyrean A1

The existing X’Pert Pro A1 diffractometer in the X Ray Diffraction service (UDRX) has been replaced.

The new Empyrean A1 diffractometer is ready to work in the measurement modes we already offered plus new services involving other measurement possibilities.

With the new Empyrean A1 diffractometer, we can work with Cu or Mo tubes, in reflection or transmission geometry. With the primary beam monochromator included we can work with Cu Kalpha1 monochromatic radiation in both geometries.

The measurements with this diffractometer that we are already offering include:

• Reflection mode scans with lambda Cu Ka1 or Cu Ka1+2
• Transmission mode scans (capillaries) with lambda Cu Ka1 or Cu Ka1+2
• Transmission mode scans (flat samples) with lambda Cu Ka1 or Cu Ka1+2
• Transmission mode scans (capillaries) with lambda Mo Ka1+2
• Transmission mode scans (flat samples) with lambda Mo Ka1+2

This measurement offer is possible because the diffractometer includes focusing mirrors for both Cu and Mo radiation and the Cu mirror can be used in combination with a primary beam monochromator. In addition, the detection system consists in a fast 1Der detector with a high energy resolution which allows to filter out the unwanted secondary fluorescent radiation, resulting in excellent background levels.

The combination of optic modules and detector of this Empyrean A1 diffractometer produces high quality x ray diffraction scans for crystallographic analysis (cell parameter determination or refinement, Rietveld refinements, …).
