Total Organic Carbon Analysis TOC

Organic carbon (TOC) comprises the sum of all organic compounds in a sample. A typical analysis for TOC measures both the total carbon present as well as the inorganic carbon (IC). Subtracting the inorganic carbon from the total carbon yields TOC (TOC=TC-IC). With this technique, the sample is combusted to form carbon dioxide. The CO2 formed is measured directly by an nondispersive infrared detector (NDIR). The amount of CO2 in a sample is directly proportional to the concentration of carbon in the sample.
